Hurricane Beryl, the earliest-ever Category 5 storm in the Atlantic, is threatening Jamaica with at least $1 billion in losses and damage as it brings dangerous storm surges, high winds and flooding rains. Beryl reached Category 5 strength – the top of the Saffir-Simpson scale — late Monday after devastating the Caribbean’s Windward Islands. The storm, 625 miles (1,006 kilometers) east-southeast of Kingston, maintained that power with winds of 165 miles per hour, according to an 8 a.m. New York time advisory from the US National Hurricane Center.
